Update:

Past the posting date and no foreign transaction fee!!!

So the solution to avoiding any fees with Etihad is booking directly with their reservations in the USA.

I even got them to book an AA and UA segment on the ticket and they had no problems...I just looked up the fare info on the ITA site and emailed them the itienerary that I wanted.
