I did ORD-MEX every week for almost a year and I have never been asked for proof of return ticket.
The Ticketing agents at the airport might ask, but they never stopped me. And I used to use the agents only to get on to a different flight. If you use the kiosk, there is never any issue.
And with Int'l OLCI now up and running, there should be of little need to visit the TA counter other than dropping off your bags
