question on not completing a R/T tix

I have a round trip tix leaving tomorrow for a vacation I planned a few months ago. The outbound is a T fare, the inbound is a B. I have to make a connection in ATL before returnig to MSP. Just found out I need to be in a different city the following day and it would make more sense to fly to that location from ATL rather than getting in to MSP late and having to take a 6am flight out the next morning.
Is there any risk of incurring DL's wrath if I buy a multi-city tix from ATL and not complete my R/T? The DL agent told me they have to re-issue the entire ticket, making my vacation flights a full Y, at about 2 1/2 times the cost plus.
I guess the other option is to complete the outbound then change the inbound, but the DL agent would not even discuss that. Any thoughts?
