I vote for Amsterdam. You can take the train out to Zandvort an Zee for a day at the beach, the bus to Edam for the cheese market and bike riding in the country side, see windmills, visit the Van Gogh museum, and eat Dutch pancakes for dinner. AND everyone does speak English regularly. I am fluent in German so I picked up Dutch pretty easily, learned quite a bit for our first trip there, and struggled to find opportunities to use it. The canals are wonderful, the architecture is beautiful, and the food is quite delicious. Don't miss the Indonesian rice table!!
