Also the steward or stewardess themselves do not their flying schedule much earlier in advance to help a passenger who has booked on a flight that he or she is to help someone get a cabin upgrade ;-)
i have seen this happen....

on a recent jet flight from dubai - delhi i was the only passenger in première....about 5 minutes after the flight took off one of the steward got this couple over from coach....it looked pretty apparent that this guy was friends with this couple....

on an air india flight a couple of years ago, my wife & i were flying business from mumbai - delhi & my brother was sitting in coach....i asked the stewardess if it would be ok if he sat with us & she said after the flight takes off she will see what she can do....10-15 minutes into the flight she went & got him to business....
