I have certainly worked to maximize AA miles at times (DTW-ORD-LAX-ANC vs. the NW non-stop as one example), but the OP's goals of maximizing AA miles and minimizing cost are simply incompatible. Save the money (and time) for a journey where AA offers a more efficient routing.
