I guess they want less bulky cargo than boxes since most cargo boxes exceed the maximum length for checked luggage. I used to check-in boxes full of dirty laundry when I was on extended assignment; it just saved me the grief of packing things neatly.

Another issue might be weight restrictions on these flights due to the duration of flights. Most of them are served by narrowbodies.
