I believe this happens in the best of airlines in all continents ..I know of folks who fly certain airlines, just because they know the station manager or someone higher and always get upgraded ..
This problem IMO is not only with the continent but anywhere.. If u know ppl, u r ahead..I recall also some instances, wherein the flights are totally booked but ppl get tickets after calling up someone at quite attractive seat buckets .. unfortunately I am still in the quest to get to know someone big myself
