I would have thought that the fact that it's an award ticket shouldn't really make any difference.

Yes, other people will have "bought" their tickets, but so did you at some point along the way, & that's how BA have rewarded you with your award ticket for being loyal. To be bumped wouldn't really be a good way to treat loyal customers IMHO.
