On the plus side, you're there when they scan your bag and can watch them if they choose to paw through your stuff, thus reducing (but not eliminating) the possibility of TSA employee theft.
In my case, I couldn't even do that. When I reached the front of the line, there was a big pile of bags, and I was told to just leave mine in the pile. I could not watch them be put in the machine because the TSA employees told me I had to leave because it was a "secure" area. Didn't seem too secure to me.
