It depends on the risk. It's one thing to run across the road in a gap between cars before the little red man turns green, it's quite another to play dice with a plane load of people.

The Finnish Air Force made the following statement regarding the F-18 that flew through the ash last week: "The images show that short-term flying can cause substantial damage to an aircraft engine", a full report and images can be found here.
