Customs is the major issue - had to show receipts for some household equipment brought in last trip - even though we *within* the stipulated residential limit...

I am considering taking a portable air-con machine (that would weigh < 30kg) as checked luggage. Is this allowed ? or would the box have to been a certain size for the airline to accept it when I check-in at LHR.
I do it all the time.

Actually, you are lucky coming from LHR - it is one of the best airports luggage-wise in the Jet system, where you get better than average allowances.

Hmm, that might be a bit too heavy, eh?

I just saw a massive LCD TV being brought in at the same time we flew, by a guy who looked like non-rev, because he was escorted by Jet staff (at point of departure), dressed rather shabbily - but apparently everything was "arranged" when he got to BOM with Customs - he was never hassled at all, while we were pulled aside!
