san888 did it correctly. You get 3 pts for all charges then an additional 6 pts for Hilton charges for a total of 9 pts on the Surpass. Amex calculates 3 pts on all charges first then adds in the bonus points after parceling out the bonuc categories.

If Amex gave the base 3 pts for all charges but no additional pts for the $1600 stay, he is missing the 6 pt/$ Hilton charges bonus.

A similar thing happened with the regular Hilton Amex previously. The base points were done appropriately but the bonus points were not.
