Ditto that. It doesn't hurt to ask on the departure day. A couple of weeks ago, they were going to leave the gate with an empty exit row for an almost sold out transcontinental flight until I show up 5 minutes before departure to take one of those exit row seats (I did a last minute switch from another flight after finding out VDB was not going to happen).
