Instead of picking a flight off a list, it's typing in a command with the flight number and booking code to book the flight. When you do that, it may come back confirmed or unconfirmed. If the space requested is indeed available, it will come back confirmed. Sometimes it's referred to as a "blind sell" because the agent doesn't see the flight before booking it.
