You can bring one companion on another reservation into E+ so that's not a problem. As a 1P, you get 3 bags up to 70 pounds each on UA metal. If that's enough luggage for both of you, then it won't matter.

On the other hand:

You'll have to redeem miles for three one-way awards or the equivalent (since there are no stopovers on domestic awards), so it may be worth saving the miles for something better.
