Exit rows can only be pre-booked by 1p or higher (1k, GS). If you're a 2p, 3p, or have purchased E+ access, you can request an exit row seat from the gate or ticketing agent on the day of your flight. I had pretty good luck getting exit rows as a 2p.
It's quite common for 1K and GS who booked flights reasonably early to get upgraded a few days out - this will often free exit row space. If most *G Elites aren't obsessive about their seat selections on a particular flight, ie checking every day
, those seats can often be open day of departure.
