I was just looking at EWR-HKG-EWR, I searched for upgrades on both sectors
and the return was available, but outbound was waitlisted. The odd part was that the return was pretty full and the EWR-HKG was nearly empty up front.
It seems there is no rhyme or reason as to how the upgrade seats are released. It seems my upgrades clear the waitlist on this route sooner on the fuller flight and take much longer on the less full flights. There is no guarantee of clearing the waitlist, however, as my upgrade success as plat on this route has been much lower this year than last year.
