I agree - our suite was roughly the same price as the sea-front villa we had at One & Only Reethi Rah in the Maldives last year. However, with a small child in tow Dubai does offer a good mix of sun, beach, nappy retailers and modest flight times.
The Madinat guest mix was quite interesting. There was what you would loosely call the global-travelling monied set (which is sort of where I sit), a large number of Russians (of the blonde wife, old fat husband variety) and a surprisingly large number of what I'd call 'well paid working class Brits' (ie plumber-types). A disturbing number of 3-4 year old kids running around in designer Armani / D&G swimming trunks! And I chucked my Hermes beach cap onto a bench at one point, only to realise that it was laying next to another Hermes beach hat .....
