"Upgrades may be available" question

I feel a little silly asking this but here goes:

I'm going to be booking DEN - LHR and will request upgrades (SWU2). I'm checking the appropriate box in the search engine indicating I want upgrade eligible flights but I have a question on the display I get in response.

If one segment has the "Upgrades may be available" message displayed but the other does not, does that really mean no upgrade possibility for the second segment or is it just that the message isn't repeated on what is considered one trip? For example, the message is there for DEN - ORD but not for ORD - LHR. Of course, it's the longer, overseas segment where we really want the upgrades.

I assume if it's a direct flight (DEN-LHR) and there is no message at all, then there's truly no upgrade option available.

Thanks
