ALL Airside staff must go through security... certainly in the US and the UK. In both countries all Airside staff under go security clearance before gaining employment... including a criminal records check.
a) In the USA, there are plenty of airports where staff with valid SIDA badges do not need to undergo physical screening prior to accessing the airside.
b) In the UK, the criminal records check is only a UK CRC. I personally know of at least 2 persons (non-UK but EU citizens) who held UK airside passes even though they had prior criminal records in their home countries which did not show up on a UK Disclosure. Their airside passes were subsequently invalidated when this was found out, but there are dozens who have undoubtedly slipped through the cracks.
