I'll test it on Sunday and report back. I usually use mobile WWAN, which is no good on the rugged, isolated coastal stretch between Gaviota and Narlon, CA. If the wi-fi works at all on that stretch, I'll be very happy.
The AU thread said they might charge $5 for wi-fi service in the future. Please, Amtrak, exempt sleeper pax from this fee. If AmtrakConnect continues to be free on Acela Express and in NEC stations, it should definitely be free for sleeper pax on any train.
On the other hand, if this service is available only in the Pacific Parlour Car, I could see why Amtrak would want to use it to enhance the Parlour's operating revenue, as they do with the coffee bar and wine tastings. But from the perspective of the passenger who already paid hundreds or thousands of dollars to go sleeper, those fees are also obnoxious.
If AmtrakConnect does expand to become uniformly fee-based, exempting Select and/or Select Plus members would be a nice benefit (as would exempting us from other fees such as station parcel check). I realize that airlines don't exempt their elites from wi-fi charges by the third-party providers, but they do exempt them from many other fees! Since Amtrak is good about not charging many fees to begin with, exemptions from the few that do exist would be a great touch, and far more useful for many of us than some of the coupons we get in the mail.
