Standby is based on the operating carrier. So, yes, in the past, AC-ticketed but UA-operated flight booking would allow you to standby for free on an earlier UA flight. Now they would let you do so, but for the $50 UA standby fee. If it was the other way around (UA-ticketed, AC-operated), you would have to pay the same day change fee to get on an earlier AC flight.
