I suspected costs might have something to do with it but I had naively hoped that something else might have come into play, such as obstructing radar returns or something funky like that.

If it was indeed costs and the sections at either ends were lopped off the original, does that mean if BAA/BA might plonk on an extension in the future? Or will the costs of doing that outweigh any benefits? I'm guessing the latter..
