It is odd indeed. In nearly 99 % of my flights TATL Customs never ask to see the passport, in some cases in the nothing to declare door there is not even a bored customs inspector. OTH,
always there is an immigration/passport control in all European airports which have flights arriving outside Schengen/EU.
