That doesn't sound like an AF/KL/DL transfer since those take place inbetween 2D/E/F which isn't hot or overcrowded or poorly signed. Maybe you are referring to the old T1?
It was a connection between long-haul AF and short-haul KL, definitely not the old T1. Maybe it was just a bad day, but it (plus the consistantly bad experience I have had) put me off CDG for a long time... I've never particularly liked the airport anyway. Rarely had a good experience there. My experiences at AMS are by contrast almost always positive, but then I am usually originating and arriving.
