In the July heat with kids in tow, I definitely recommend a taxi from Tokyo station rather than a ten minute, confusing walk from the bowels of Shinbashi station to the Conrad.

No need to worry about "taxi hunting". After reaching Tokyo station, head for an exit and there are taxi ranks (marked 'TAXI') where you'll see lots of taxis. You don't need expertise in deer-stalking to find one.
