Faux balconies. What's the point?

Maybe it's where I've been traveling lately, but I've noticed more hotels whose rooms have "faux balconies" -- sliding glass doors that lead to a "balcony" that is a foot or two feet at most wide.

Not big enough to drag a chair out, not really big enough to stand on comfortably.

So, why build such at all? I would think it would be more expensive than windows both in construction and HVAC costs.
