Determine what it is you want, and ask for it specifically. Use words like "disappointed" and phrases like "if I am to return I'd like..."
If they have a shot at redeeming you as a customer, your odds of success are much higher.
EDIT: I guess I have higher expectations than some here, but if I found a used rubber in my room, I'd make an issue of it so management knew they had an issue if nothing else.
