It is an interesting story. It wouldn't deter me from planning a connection in GRU ( without a Brazilian Visa ), but it is definitely good to know just what sorts of issues can occur when things go wrong.

And you will find similar stories for many other airports. I very rarely transit in a country for which I don't have a visa as I don't want to run into those types of issues.
