Point-wise the only thing you miss out on by flying AC over UA is the potential for DEQM.
That is making this fare very tempting, even from EWR. It will be more miles from NYC, if combined with a separate transcon from NYC-SFO. The fare seems to be very much alive. I was trying to see if it pulls up, OCT25/NOV15. From SFO it shows $498+72 and from EWR it is $738+56.
