SFO-AKL Economy Fare - 2 Pax

Used one comp u/g for each pax to PE which was confirmed immediately ^

I just called the GE helpdesk and had the u/g requests refunded so I could re-structure from my original economy fare to BP by way of - 2 x comps (pax 1) and A$730 (pax 2).

The comps were refunded on basis of original fare being PE not economy so I could then use the 2 comps for both pax up to BP. Effectively saving me A$730

Of course I am way to honest and called the helpdesk to inform mistake and pay the extra A$730 for request to BP. I tried to sweet talk my honesty for confirmed u/g's but no such luck

What I find interesting is that when you have upgrade requests from economy to BP, if you don't get BP you go back to economy. I take it one could negotiate at check in (subject to availability) a seat in PE and have difference in A$ refunded??
