Sorry - as has been posted just above mine - this is not necessarily true for Jetstar international.
The A330 has the same seat pitch as Qantas international economy at 31'. Food and drink is a little on the expensive side (at $30 for the 'feed me' option - especially when you compare it to Air Asia). But the overhead cabin space is the same. And there IS IFE - even free IFE if you watch the main screens. And audio. And you get a bottle of water.
Delays are not that frequent either.
For the option of direct flights out of MEL they really are the best way to go if you want to earn points on Qantas (star class is often little more expensive than QF economy anyways).
By the time you waste at least 3 hours going via Sydney (and usually more than this) you are already a third to half of the way to bangkok taking JQ non-stop.
