It's a problem if you are booking an inclusive rate, e.g. breakfast included. Even with a spouse, the spouse would NOT get the breakfast. The free spouse part ONLY inlcudes the room, nothing else.

I occasionally travel w/my BF who technically is not my spouse. Never had a problem w/anyone asking about him. But then I am like davef139, I usually forget to change the auto fill (which is set at 1). The only time I am very careful is when it is an inclusive rate since my guest will otherwise no be allowed to have whatever is included.
