The perforated number is usually the passport number. At least that's what other countries do. I haven't seen a new Cdn ppt yet to take a close look.
The security feature is called "laser perforation". If you look closely, the holes are slightly conical. But if you see scorching around the edges, it suggests the passport manufacturer might need to dial back the power setting on the laser by a few watts.
