Perhaps he said "its not like I was setting my shoes on fire," and not "I was setting my shoes on fire" and the FAM's still overreacted.
Bingo! He probably forgot to memorize the forbidden phrases and word combinations while in an airport/airplane in the US. Mentioning shoes and fire at the same time especially if dark skinned is a serious offense!
