Welcome to FT.

You can buy an economy ticket and upgrade with miles. However, redeeming miles for a first or business class seat is a much better usage of your miles, especially a first class seat for merely an additional 20,000 miles. Since cost of a F or C class seat is much higher than a Y seat. Although you do not earn miles for an award ticket.

You can always try other Star Alliance partners. By staying with all UA metal, you have more flexibility. i.e. waitlist for another UA flight.

Good luck and please come back and let us know what you end up ticketing.
