I had a ShopSafe number with some questionable charges. Actually the amount charged was higher than the limit I had set. The charge was declined but the FIA security dept. called me to ask if I made the charges.
They closed the account out (even though the actual card number itself wasn't involved in any fraudulent transactions) and Fed Exed me a new card.
They closed out my online access and I had to create a new account. I don't think there's any evidence that my online account had been hacked. More likely, someone got the Shop Safe number that I had used and tried to use it again.
With the new number, I tried to charge to reserve a hotel in Italy, many of which do not have secure reservations and they ask you to fax or email your card number. Initially they declined the charge and I had to call and tell them it was okay.
Some hotels have Skype, which is more secure than plain email so I used that route when I could.
If it wasn't for the 2% cash back, I probably wouldn't have gone to the lengths to keep the card. But FIA is also pretty vigilant. They also noted fraud on a previous Visa I had with them too. You have to wonder though if their cards are more vulnerable to theft.
