And make sure you do lock it when checking in
I had my Mother Lode cut from inside an unlocked pocket during its trip from MAD to MAN. Unzipping the pocket allowed an cut to be made in the lining, giving access to the main bag for a hand. I had no valuables in there, so nothing lost.
It wasn't until I repacked my bag the following week I even noticed the damage!
