My Mum's (RIP) answer if we children started crying or whinging was "If you don't stop, you'll get something to cry about!" I think fellow passengers on trains, buses and the Irish ferries had a better, quieter journey in those days!
My mother's answer was "if you do not behave properly, you will not be coming out with me/us again", and she meant it. I hardly ever misbehaved in public in any way. I think I misbehave more now than I did when I was a child.
