One kink is DL sometimes closes the wait list. Once it's closed, it seems to stay closed. In the past, you have no chance of an upgrade because you didn't make the list. It doesn't matter if there are open seats at departure, if you didn't make the list, you are screwed.
Maybe this will change with the new day of departure policy....
As an FYI for those that are DM and possibly even PM. I just called to get added to the WL on a few Int'l segments with qualifying fares for SWU usage since I knew there wasn't Z inventory available per expertflyer. With the first agent I spoke with she WL me on 3 out of 4 of the Int'l segments but said that the WL for the 4th was closed. I asked hew how I can get added to it since as a DM I'm pretty confident not everyone currently on the WL is DM? She said there was no way to open the list or see who was on it and that was essentially it.
Called back 5 minutes later, spoke to another woman who told me the same thing initially. This time when I told her I was pretty confident that not everyone on the WL was DM and that my status as a DM should have priority, she said "you're right" hold on a second and after about 3 minutes on hold came back and said "Ok, you're on the WL for all segments now."
My assumption is that she contacted Customer Care which is where my next conversation was going to be had she not come back and told me I was on the WL.
