Was the UA flight on the 772 or the 744? Their 772 hasn't been retrofit yet up front and is known for not being so great seat-wise.
UA does not use the 744s between IAD/CDG but their run down old tired ratty 772s...I have flown the IAD/CDG route 6 times in the last six months and have always found either the AVOD, Seat, or something to be INOP in Business Class...I think US Airways has a better hard & soft product on their A330s in comparison to UA's old 772s.
