A message pops up telling the desk how to greet you. Things like "Welcome back", "Welcome to our hotel" etc. It's possible they are misreading it.
Being greeted by name is meant as a personal touch though I feel it's more personal if the people actually know me.
Interesting. At a Hampton I stay at for 3 nights about every other week - the same FD clerk checks me in every time - and everytime he asks me "Have you stayed here before?". In addition he never greets me by name. I assumed he could tell that I have stayed there before from the system, even if he doesn't recognize me.
