I have to admit that I've been to New York many times, but I haven't been that high up on Manhattan Island before. This time, I'd like to go see the Cloisters. Looks like I would take the A train to 190th st., and then walk about 10 minutes through the park to get there.

I know that this part of Manhattan used to be fairly dangerous in the 70s and 80s, but it's my understanding that it's been cleaned up, and the South Bronx is now what you want to avoid. Have I been misinformed? Is this area generally safe, or should I take a cab from the Upper West Side?
