Air Canada flies from YYZ to SAN, SNA and LAX during the summer. That SAN and LAX are about the same distance apart as HKG and CAN - and linked by a very good Interstate - doesn't mean AC expects people in SAN to drive to LAX to fly to eastern Canada.
Yes, transborder flights are one thing, long-haul international flights are another. IOW no long-haul international flights operate into SNA and few if any into SAN and that to me supports what the previous poster was saying about proximity to a much larger international airport gateway as HKG represents to CAN.
