I tried explaining this to an FA on my SWF-NRT turnaround flight a few weeks ago. I was in NRT for less then 3 hours before I came home on the same plane that brought me there.

They thought I was crazy too, but then I mentioned they they get to fly for practically nothing (albeit standby) so maybe that has something to do with it.
