I ended up buying a Sony DSC-TX7 for about THB 15500 at MBK. The price in SIN duty free was about the same. At MBK they tossed in an 8GB SD card and a Sony soft carrying case that they had marked for THB 1300. I'll get THB 700 or so back in VAT at the airport.
At JR in the US the camera would have been about $80 cheaper and the SD card would have been about $40. If we add in the VAT refund I think it is about a wash.
