I have sweet-talked my way into a bulkhead seat on 777s a number of times many months before the flight. The caveat has always been that if a disabled passenger (or possibly a screaming baby if it's a bassinet seat) could bump me out. Don't forget that that August flight has been available for booking since last September, and the extra-legroom program just started.
