The only time sitting in your assigned seat comes into play, other than the musical chairs mentioned already, is in the event of a crash where the initial body identification is made by who's supposed to be sitting in which seat according to the manifest. Since that type of accident is very rare and there are other ways of making the final identification of remains, changing seats is really no problem.
