Very simple logic: Because everybody needs to be re-screened when entering the Schengen-Area.
Since the US aren't part of Schengen (and I am pretty sure they don't plan to apply) you get the joy of being re-screened. Just like the US don't always trust Europeans, Europeans like to re-screen people coming from outside the Schengen-Area.
